Dermatopathology Fellowship

The UMMC Department of Dermatology's dermatopathology fellowship is a one-year program which provides intensive training in dermatopathology for board-certified/eligible graduates of ACGME-approved dermatology and pathology programs.

The UMMC dermatopathology service currently signs our 6,000 accessions per year.  Fellows spend every other month rotating affiliate faculty at Dermatopathology Associates, a private and certified dermatopathology lab in Jackson, MS (18,000+ accessions per year).

Dermatopathology fellows with a background in clinical dermatology will rotate in anatomic pathology for 8 months, devoting 50 percent of that time to these areas. The remaining four months of the year will be dedicated exclusively to dermatopathology. Fellows with a background in pathology will rotate through one of UMMC’s four dermatology clinic locations during an 8-month period, devoting 50 percent of the day to clinical responsibilities. Fellows will be active participants with hands-on experience in the gross and microscopic evaluation of a variety of surgical pathology specimens, including exposure to intraoperative consultations and telepathology. They will be exposed to sub-specialty areas, including hematopathology, bone and soft tissue pathology, neuropathology, as well as others. Training will also include the use of special techniques in histochemistry, immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence microscopy, and electron microscopy.

Academic requirements include:

  • Attendance at pathology conferences, including surgical pathology didactic and microscopic conferences;
  • Journal club;
  • grand rounds; and
  • Autopsy conference.

Fellows will enjoy many teaching opportunities and will find this to be a key component to learning. The dermatopathology fellow will also be responsible for preparing photomicrographs photography and presenting cases during the monthly Dermatology grand rounds. The fellowship is ACGME accredited and satisfies requirements for membership in the American Society of Dermatopathology.
